Social Bookmarking - why?
We provide some useful technical resource pages here. If you find them interesting and informative, you can assist us to popularise these pages by doing one of two things: link to one of our pages from your website; or bookmark one on your favourite social bookmarking service. Click the icon for your preferred one, on the page you wish to add to your list of favourite pages or show to others, and enter it up on the bookmark site of your choice. You'll need to create a login there but it only takes a minute - and only the first time of course.
So, you can:
- Bookmark a page for your own use, to come back to later.
- Keep your large and growing list of bookmarks off your own PC, and on someone else's space.
- Share these bookmarks with others – and you can see and use theirs, as well. It's a community thing. You can keep them private if you want.
How do you use social bookmarking?
Click one of the icons when you're on a page you like. Choose one of the Social Bookmark services there, like Reddit for instance. Create an account with them (you just need to fill a username, password, and email address – the usual stuff), enter the chosen page bookmark, then you're away. That only takes a minute or two; and next time it's much quicker. Many of these accounts activate straightaway, without an email confirmation – like Reddit and Stumble for instance – so there are probably a lot of elvis[at]heaven.com accounts there...Then, you can store all your bookmarks with them. You can have a private list and a public list. So, maybe you're not going to share your bank login page (though it doesn't matter much, when you think about it), but you might as well share the rest. Some of these bookmarking services are fast, some are slow. Some give you a button to put on the toolbars up at the top of your browser page; others don't (you go there via an icon provided on a page you like). Some have you install (yet another) toolbar, but you can ditch that once you've enlisted, and just pull the relevant button off it; like Stumble.upon, for instance. The whole process is probably easier with the Firefox browser, because it's designed for this sort of thing; but it works with any browser. If you want to store a private list of bookmarks, then you need to register with a genuine email address that they can send an account activation message to.It can take a couple of minutes with the slower ones to set up an account, but once it's done, it's done. Give it a go. Anyway, you're doing this at work, aren't you, so what's the big hurry? What do we get out of it? We get a link, which means that in various ways people can find us more easily. Do a couple for us, and show us it was worth it.
LinksWe really appreciate people linking to us. There is more info on this on our NetResources page, accessed on the main menu on the front page. If you can, use our preferred format and link to a page you found helpful. We are happy to discuss this sort of thing at any time.
Get in touchDon't forget you can always get in touch, and let us know if there is something we can do better; or by all means if you wish to discuss anything else. We progress by helping people; it's fun to do, and sometimes we get places we never would have without that attitude.
